| When he was 12, Zhang apprenticed to a traveling flute master in China.After more than 40 years as a professional musician in China,he was recorded in the Register of Great Musicians,awarded the title of First Class Composer,and received the Wen Hua prize---China's highest national arts award.Since moving to the US twelve years ago,Zhang received a Bush Fellowship,two McKnight Composer's Fellowships,two Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Fellowships,a Cultural Collaboration grant,and three commissions from the American Composer's Forum.Zhang has performed throughout China,and in Russia,Poland, Romania,France,Belgium,Switzerland,Malaysia,and the US.He plays traditional Chinese music on a variety of woodwind instruments:xun,hulusu,bawu,qu di,band di,kou di,xiao,mabu,pili,and gu di(turkey leg bone flute dating back 9,000 years).Zhang plays music that comes from China's historical dynasties,and also music from the minority peoples of China with whom he has studied and lived.He has written over thirty compositions for the Minnesota Chinese Music Ensemble,and been commissioned to write a four part choral work for the Dale Warland Singers.One of Zhang's most recent appearances was with the St.Paul Chamber Orchestra. |
